Deepika Padukone Inside out

deepika-padukone-wikiRemember Sharmila tagore in Gunguna rahe hain bhanwre from Aradhna or Hema malini in Jab tak hai jaan from Sholay, What is the first image that comes in your mind?? Beautiful valleys, snow capped mountains or Gabbar singh, Dharmendra hands tied, sambha sitting somewhere on the top of a random cliff.. Now remember Jackeline Fernandes in lat lag gayi or Katrina kaif in Zara zara touch me touch me.. No location memory would pop, it will all be about glittery costumes with short dresses and sharp dance movements with a particular expression constant on concerned performer’s face which will come in mind first.. Things have changed.. Bollywood is about glamour, style, dresses, shine and faces now.

It’s not that we don’t have anything else left in our cinema, but yes, things have changed, instead of guys (Dharmendra, Jeetendra and other Indras) running behind girls, girls like Priyanka, Katrina, Deepika are making guys run behind them.. Yes Bollywood is now about these super girls, their stardom and their portrayal of themselves. Priyanka is a powerful actor, Katrina is a beautiful woman, but here I can talk about a girl who has proven in these years that she is a good actor and at the same time awesomely beautiful. We are talking about no one else but Miss Padukone.

Within a very short span of seven years in show bizz , Deepika already has a significant number of super hits in her kitty, she has been a  sportsperson , model, actor , dancer everything and now has finally acquired the status of being a superstar..  Padukone comes from a star sportsperson’s family , herself a national level badminton player. One would wonder, what actually led her to this glittery movie industry?  If a tall and a beautiful urban girl asks her parents she wants to be a model, they won’t be that surprised,  but yes if she has an alternate career option where she can excel with high certainty, one is forced to ask “Why beta?” Here is what DP had to say “I am playing badminton only because it ran in the family”. That was the day when her journey of modelling began. After doing a couple of “Liril” soap ads and a music video for Himesh Reshammiya, she got an offer from Farah khan, the director of Om shanti Om and she got her first lead double role opposite Shahrukh khan. Well, this girl surely had her own share of good luck!

Deepika’s father, Mr. Prakash Padukone was an international level Badminton player, her sister is a golfer and her grandfather was the former secretary of Mysore Badminton association. Coming from a family with good sports background DP naturally ended up being a good badminton player. She first worked as a child model at the age of eight and when she was in 10th standard, she decided to leave badminton and pursue her career in modelling. ”My father was with me for every step which I took in my career” says Deepika.

Padukone initially tried in a couple of advertisements, started doing a Kannada movie, but always had a deep desire and faith in her that one day she will be a Bollywood star, least did she know that  the time is going to come so early. Padukone after being offered Om shanti Om, watched a lot of Hema Malini movies and guess that is where is that wave came from. Padukone’s trademark wave in her debut movie spread like a viral move, earlier we only had Helen and Hema who could wave and make a sensation. Her Dhoom tana made everyone groove, she thus became the only actor of her generation who could romance Sunil Dutt and Rajesh Khanna onscreen. Padukone got all the appreciation she deserved, was compared to Aishwarya Rai and sorts, her performance was liked by one and all, which resulted in her winning Filmfare debut award of that year.

DP’s journey had begun, she got offers after offers, and her next release was Bachna ae Haseeno in which she was paired with her then love interest Mr. Ranbir Kapoor. The movie was a big hit, but alas, our little miss DP’s performance was bad. She had a very less number of lines and she couldn’t even emote in those lines properly. Namrata Joshi of Outlook wrote “Deepika in the movie is like a mannequin”. Then in 2009 came another disaster “Chandni chowk to China”. The film was a big flop and according to critics “Deepika is wasted in the movie”. After doing a shitty item song in Shahrukh’s Billu, we saw her in Love Aaj Kal, a refreshing movie with Padukone putting up a fairly good performance.

Then came the year 2010 and we saw Deepika in a series of five films. The first being  Karthik calling Karthik, the film was badly made, Deepika was not that great too, then came Housefull,  quoted by critics as ”the festival of bad acting”, Deepika was heavily criticized for doing such an awful role. Followed “Khelein hum jee jaan se” and “Lafangey Parindey”, give yourself a pat on your back if you heard of these movies. But yes Deepika was better than any other actor in either of these movies.

Then in 2011, we had an item song in Dum maaro Dum and the movie “Desi Boyz” Deepika looked sexy in the item number but her role once again in Desi Boyz did not get the kind of appreciation she expected. Deepika was given a tag of being an ultimate “non-performer” and questions like whether models should do acting?? Started flowing in, thanks to Miss Padukone.

And in 2012, came Cocktail, the movie actually had a quite cliché storyline but the performances, especially that of Deepika’s made that movie a must watch. Playing an intense lover who doesn’t know how to react when her man starts loving her own best friend is also a character we have seen many times, but how Padukone peels off layers of that character, displaying her versatility is highly appreciable.Later in 2013, Deepika worked in Yeh Jawani hai Deewani , Chennai express and Ram-leela, all the three movies were among biggest hits of the year and Padukone won accolades for her brilliant performances in Ram-leela and Chennai Express. Guess our lady was back and she has surpassed all the criticisms like “plastic expressionist of the year”, “Non-performer” etc. DP after winning over classes and masses proved that she is way ahead of other ladies of her generation and has potential to overcome any challenge this industry throws on her.

On personal front, her relationships were always a big issue with the media, she was very open about her relationship with Ranbir during her initial years, and after the breakup, even talked a “lot” about him on Karan johar’s show, with the loud mouth Sonam Kapoor, who behaved like another Archana puran singh in the show , by laughing every other second for one hour continuosly. God bless Sonam with some brains and a hit movie, but nevertheless the way Padukone carried herself in the show and the way she carried herself when she came in 2014 with Priyanka chopra was entirely different. Padukone’s love interests changed from Ranbir to Siddhartha Malya to Mr. Ram-leela Ranveer Singh. In one recent episode of Koffee with Karan, she  spoke about how lonely she felt when she and Ranbir broke up and the way she had to carry herself because until then his friends were the only friends she had. She was left all alone in the big city of Mumbai but her courage and determination to make big in this industry did not let her rest. This lady loved her work and had confidence in what she does, and hence she still stands as one of the most wonderful performers we have today in Bollywood.

Now a days we can see Deepika endorsing for Parachute, Sony, Yamaha and many other famous brands.. She has another Farah khan movie “Happy new year” coming up with Shahrukh again, and we can expect her to nail this time again with an even brilliant and fine performance. DP as we choose to call her, has a great potential to make it big in this industry and we hope to see her doing some great performances in futur. I Was about to post this article and just got this news that Deepika won filmfare best actress award of this year for her performance in Ramleela..Great news indeed!! Way to go Lady..
