Shreya Gupta, a Bong beauty brought up in Chennai, started off as a child artiste and did films like Varanam Aayiram, Pallikoodam, Thiruvilaiyadal Aarambam and Romeo Juliet. After her post graduation in Bengaluru, she wanted to try her hand in the film industry at Mumbai. She joined Anupam Kher’s acting school ‘Actor Prepares’, simultaneously started getting advertisement opportunities and has since done close to 25 advertisements.
Now, she is playing a crucial role in Balaji Telefilm’s brand new web series Ragini MMS 2.2. Talking to DC, Shreya shares interesting insights about her role and her plans for the future.
“I play one of the protagonists in the web series, which bear the same theme of the Ragini MMS films — horror and sex,” starts Shreya, adding, “My character, Zoya, is a very practical person, who stays away from all kinds of drama. She has very firm and concrete ideas about life and the character is pivotal to how the story progresses.” Shreya will be featured in all 12 episodes of the series.
Shreya is of the opinion that web series provide more creative freedom — “I have only been part of the Tamil film industry, and comparing films to web content, I think web series have an edge because they don’t have a censor governing them and hence there are no creative boundaries. Also, the setting is a lot more rooted and hence people can relate to it a lot better.”
Shreya has signed another web series called Going Viral, produced by OML which will be released on Amazon Prime. “My family has been very supportive. If not for them, I wouldn’t have had the courage to move to Mumbai and start everything from scratch. I wanted to come out of my comfort zone to explore opportunities, and my parents have always trusted my decision,” Shreya concludes.
