New Delhi: Jayanthi Natarajan resigned today as Minister of State for Environment and Forests as part of a reported shake-up within senior Congress leadership triggered by party vice-president Rahul Gandhi.
Sources said Jayanthi Natarajan has been asked to return to party work ahead of general elections, due by May next year.
Sources said more ministers are expected to resign as Congress prepares itself for the national elections after some serious drubbing in the recent assembly elections.
President Pranab Mukherjee has accepted Ms Natarajan’s resignation.
A statement from Rashtrapati Bhawan said that Petroleum Minister M Veerappa Moily has been given additional charge of the environment ministry.
