Former Puducherry Minister Hacked to Death in Broad Daylight


vmc-sivakumarFormer Puducherry Agriculture Minister VMC Sivakumar was hacked to death by an unidentified gang here on Tuesday, police said.

Sivakumar was on his way to inspect construction work when his car was blocked by the gang at Neravy-TR Pattinam near Tamil Nadu’s Nagapattinam district and attacked with sickles.

He was rushed to government hospital, where he was declared brought dead, they said.

67-year-old Sivakumar is survived by wife, two sons and two daughters.

Sivakumar was the speaker of Puducherry Assembly from 1996 to 2000. He was MLA for five terms – four times on DMK ticket and once as independent – since 1980 representing Neravy-TR Pattinam constituency. He was with the AIADMK.

Meanwhile, Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy expressed shock and agony over the murder of Sivakumar, here. In his condolence message, he said,
The government would spare none and would expeditiously nab the accused involved in the heinous crime.

Recalling the services of Sivakumar when he was the Agriculture Minister of Puducherry in 1980, and the Speaker in 1996, Narayanasamy said the multifarious social service projects that the former Minister had launched were proof of his concern for the have-nots and the downtrodden in the society.

The Chief Minister further said he had asked the police officials to expedite the steps and nab the accused involved in the crime.

Former Welfare Minister of Puducherry P Rajavelu also expressed grief over the death of Sivakumar.
