CHENNAI: Vandalism of statues of iconic personalities such as Lenin, Periyar and Syama Prasad Mookerjee led to unrest. While Left ideologue Vladamir Lenin’s statues were vandalized in Tripura on Monday, Dravidian icon Periyar statue was toppled in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday and Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee statue was pulled down in West Bengal on Wednesday.
Reacting to the vandalism of Statues, Prakash Raj questioned BJP, ‘What’s your agenda..what are you teaching our children? please stop this statue politics.. violence breeds violence ..What was your election manifesto ..development or settling scores and goondaism??’.
Kamal Haasan who floated Makkal Needhi Maiam told Tamilians will take care of prestige of Periyar. He terms the row over Periyar statue as an attempt to divert the attention from Cauvery issue. Accusing BJP of statue politics, The Actor said, ‘Police needn’t protect Periyar statue. Nobody else but BJP Leader H Raja who called Periyar a caste fanatic needs protection. Comments against Periyar is a new low in politics’.
