I / AI (Manoharudu) Review:

I Movie Review – Story :

Vikram-Manoharudu-Stills-Vikram-in-Manoharudu-Vikram-Amy-jackson-Shankar-AiVikram plays a role of villager. Amy (NRI) plays a role of a model. Amy comes to her birth place (vikram’s village) after 16 years, since childhood. She accidentally meets Vikram there. Situations brings them closer. Once, Vikram admires her pics where she posed for her modeling. He himself dreams to be a model someday. Meanwhile, Amy becomes a brand ambassador for a MNC and also as a Promotional Model for Olympics, Beijing. She gets this opportunity defeating the so-called villain Upen, who was former brand ambassador for that MNC.He leaks a spam video of Amy to spoil her fame. He does a lot to it, where he gets information about Vikram and his dream too.fds

However he couldn’t defame Amy.In a event, there comes a situation where, Upen gets spoiled by his own experiment failing him. (His own beauty gets spoiled by his attempt to spoil Amy). His anger develops much fgsfstronger. He uses his father’s chemical factory to develop a medicine to gain his beauty back.

He wanted to test it with someone, where he remembers of Vikram, who dreams to be a model. He uses Vikram’s dream as an opportunity and cheats him to inject the chemical into him. He also asks Vikram to body build for better results. As a result of all this, Vikram becomes the most charming model in no time. He’s being selected to be one of the top models. Amy admires him for such a massive looks and improvements. She starts loving him (she already admires Vikram’s character in the beginning, which now getting into love).vdf

Vikram knows nothing about Amy’s love. When everything seems going fine, there begins the side effects of the chemical. The chemical had no positive effect on Upen, which made things worse. Then comes the scenes of Rapid changeover from normal Vikram to animal Vikram. His anger grows day by day on his own beauty. When he got to know the result is due to the chemical used, his grudge on Upen gets stronger. fd

Adding to it, he thinks Amy is also into this chemical injection.Upen is no where to be found. He hides himself. Animal Vikram going in search of Upen. Meanwhile, Amy plays a typical model, who starts hating Vikram (due to his change in looks that became ugly). She dvdis getting engaged to a rich guy. There Vikram finds her and kidnaps her, (thinking he might get Upen by kidnapping her).

But when he knows the truth, its too late. Upen is now grown into an worse animal than Vikram. And rest is a usual Hero versus Villain, with a slight difference of both being Animals. This was the leaked Story Roaming around the  net.

Performances: Vikram excels throughout the movie and his years of dedication just to make the movie that much more interesting is apparent. Amy Jackson too has done justice to her role which is very much a part of the movie unlike many other Tamil movies. Suresh Gopi and Ramkumar’s acting skills are utilized really well while Upen Patel could’ve showcased much more emotions for the role demands it.

Vikram: He has given his heart, body and 3-years of his life for ‘I’. May be, No other Indian actor would have gone to this extent for the sake of a single project. He is just flawless in ‘I’ – Accomplishes the task of multiple makeovers perfectly, Performs brilliantly in roles which offer huge scope and Exhibits excellence in action blocks. Hats off to this Great Actor!
Amy Jackson: She has got amazing screen presence and looks stunningly gorgeous throughout the course of the movie. Her attitude and chemistry with Vikram were a must watch.
Santhanam tickles the funny bone at times. Upen Patel is ineffective. Rest of the cast is adequate.

Technicalities: As disclosed earlier, I  is a technically brilliant movie. While all VFX used are executed almost perfectly, PC Sreeram’s camera work supporting such graphics stands out and has an international appeal to it. AR Rahman’s background score will definitely add accolades to his never ending list of awards. T Muthuraj as an art director might receive many awards for I  in the near future. Anthony’s editing could’ve been even more crispier.

What’s good? Most often in a Shankar movie, the critic’s first impression would be the “Larger than Life” impression that Shankar leaves behind. But in “I”, Vikram’s flies in and dunks the ball, and just keeps doing it.

Two words “Simply Awesome”! To start, “I” is not the movie that brings a character just for the sake of it, however integrates into the plot. All the hardwork Vikram has put into has a fitting justification, something that doesn’t serve just the actor’s hunger but what the fan’s stomach wants as well.

Some of the highlights include the short yet sweet exchange of Madras Baashai between Amy and Vikram, the stunning acting sequences from Chiyaan after Interval, Amy sets the screen on fire as a model, finally though I hate to repeat this in every Shankar movie; the Songs and its jaw dropping picturization. As again Rahman somehow keeps waving his magic wand for Shankar movies at ease, springs life to the movie.

PC Sreeram’s work behind the lens, especially for the shots in China are simply magnificent, also puts justice to the extensive makeup work from the Weta workshop.

Minus Points:-

Too much of hype and expectations spoil the outcome of this film a bit. Shankar has raised the bar so high with his previous films that sadly, I does not meet those expectations. No where in the film you get a feel that it is a Shankar film. He adds unnecessary elements and drags the film in many places.

Last fifteen minutes of the first half are below par, and the love story showcased during this part is boring. The movies moves back and forth in time, and the screenplay during this part takes a severe beating. May be for the first time in his career, Shankar has misplaced songs in the narrative.

Yet another major drawback is the excessive length of the film. A lot of scenes and fights could have easily been trimmed. Once the twist is revealed in the second half, the movie gets predictable.

Why, What and How? As much we enjoy Shankar’s manifestation of opulence there are staggering moments in the movie that could have changed its outlook.

  • Of all the Shankar movies, I is the most predictable one; be it the plot or the next to come sequence.
  • It’s surprising to see mediocre dubbing in a perfectionist’s movie, all the lip synch between the non-Tamil speakers look haywire.
  • At a stretch of 189 minutes, the screenplay clearly tugs along giving out time for ample dull moments, could have been trimmed.
  • An age old tested storyline heavily weighs on Vikram’s performance and makes the viewers constantly in search of thrills and perks.

Ergo, I capitalizes too much on Vikram’s energetic performances yet crosses the boundary line in style.

I Movie  Analysis :

Love, Revenge: Vintage wine in new bottle: The last time Shankar embraced romance would have been “Kadhalan”, is that right? Well, strike that! As none of his movies were short of romance, as the “Love” rather played an important aspect in almost all of his movies. With “I”, we see Shankar experimenting by rather stepping away from his usual message oriented flicks to an action cum romantic drama spearheaded by Chiyaan Vikram and Amy Jackson. Spread over a period of two years, a strict weight regime from the lead actor, trots around the globe and finally an audio launch from Arnold, so has I lived up to the expectation? Let’s find out.

The Hunchback, the beast, a bodybuilder, a suave model? The transition by Vikram as Lingesan is what “I” all about. As a diehard bodybuilder whose only goal in life is become Mr. India, deviates from his PATH by falling heads over heels on Diya (Amy). Right, as you sit gaping at Vikram’ s Greek Godish physique through his body building exhibit, out comes the Amy the diva making us sit back and wonder if anyone else could have done this role better.

Shankar takes time to establish his characters, a buildup that rather consumes a lot of time and gets more predictable on who’s who. Love being the Holy Grail of this movie, the avid chemistry between the lead pair rather blossoms in a convincing way and as one might have guessed amongst some of the scenic landscapes on earth. The movie itself switches between timelines of now and then, a part where the sinister hunchback appears out of nowhere and tortures his victims, the other part where the Bodybuilder turned model runs smitten over an upcoming diva.

With a little over 180 minutes of screenplay the plotline would have rather turned dull if not for the occasional humor infused, thanks to the wisecracks from Santhanam. The stage is set for a grand finale, a heartwarming romance between one of the hottest couple around, a couple of villains licking their wounds to get back their lost pride, so what happens next? Who is the hunchback? Enough spoilers, watch the movie to find out.
