A female bus conductor of an Indian school in Dubai was stabbed to death in broad daylight just outside the school gate on Thursday morning.

The alleged killer, her estranged husband, tried to commit suicide by cutting his wrist using the same knife, but was hospitalised by the police.

The Dubai Police said the woman, in her 30s, was stabbed five times in the chest and other parts of the body. The police did not name the accused, however, the school sources confirmed that he was the victim’s husband.

Sources said the woman, identified as Sonia, hailed from Kerala in India. She was working for the New Indian Model School (NIMS) in Al Garhoud. Apparently, the woman, who was hired only this year, was not in good terms with her husband, Ranjith.

The couple has two school-going children living in Kerala. A source at the Rashidiya police station said that the police operations room was alerted at 11.20am. Police officers rushed to the site and found that the woman had died on the spot due to her severe injuries. About 15 metres away, the police found a severely bleeding man lying on the ground, after he cut the veins of his arm.

Eyewitnesses told the police that the woman was about to enter a bus when the man approached her and started arguing with her. He then took a knife from his pocket and stabbed her in the chest and various parts of her body.

Director of Students’ Affairs at
NIMS K. R. S. Nair told Khaleej Times that none of the students witnessed the incident since it happened in the parking lot outside the school gate. He said the school’s operation was not disrupted and the kindergarten students who were to leave soon after the incident were taken to the buses and parents’ cars through another gate.

“The police cordoned off the area and the school used another gate to send off the children so that nobody goes to the spot.”

He confirmed that one of the teachers, who witnessed the incident, had to be taken to the school clinic for treatment. “I don’t think she fainted but obviously it was a huge shock and she might have needed medical assistance. I am yet to collect all details since I am away in a meeting,” he said.

The incident has shocked the teachers who were told not to discuss it with students to avoid scaring them, said a source.

The police source said the woman’s body was moved to the General Department of Forensic Medicine while the man was transferred to Rashid Hospital. The police have not interrogated the man, who is admitted in the ICU, to learn the motive behind the murder. The officer said legal action would be taken against the attacker when his health improves.
