Lok Sabha elections: Alliances in West India

0

Alliances-in-West-IndiaNew Delhi: In Western India, Maharashtra is the most populous state with 48 Lok Sabha seats. It is the second largest after UP.

Coalition governments have been ruling the state since 1994. The Shiv Sena-BJP alliance ruled between 1994-99. The Congress-NCP alliance has been in power since 1999. The state assembly is also going to polls later this year.

Except Maharashtra, in all other states in Western India, there is a direct fight between the BJP and the Congress.

Maharashtra

The Shiv Sena-BJP-RPI alliance looks stronger. The combine wants to take on the ruling Congress-NCP alliance in the state and at the Centre. The Congress-NCP alliance looks weaker.

But, the MNS led by Raj Thackeray can be a spoiler for the SS-BJP-RPI combine in the state. The BJP is desperately wooing the MNS to prevent splitting of anti-Congress-NCP votes. But, Raj is keeping them guessing and has indicated that he will go solo. It has gladdened the hearts of the Congress-NCP combine, which is desperate to retain its hold over the state.

Even the Swabhimaani Shetkari Sanghatana (SSS) led by MP Raju Shetty has also joined the SS-BJP-RPI combine. Earlier, there was a talk of him joining hands with the AAP.
