Finally .. Telangana Bill has Passed Rajya Sabha this evening at around 8:00 PM. Now its only ritual to get Presidents nod for Tealangana Bill.
New Delhi: After several years of protests, acrimony, violence and pandemonium, Parliament on February 20, 2014 finally passed the hotly debated Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Bill (2013) to create Telangana, which become India’s 29th state. With the Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party standing behind the Bill, the question was not if the Bill would be passed but when it would happen.
As protests by MPs from Seemandhra region of Andhra Pradesh continued in the Rajya Sabha and several parties including the Trinamool Congress, Communist Party of India-Marxist and Samajwadi Party declaring their opposition to the new state, the Bill was passed after several rounds of verbal slugfest between the treasury and opposition benches.
During the debate, Union Minister of State Tourism Chiranjeevi put defied the party line to oppose Telangana and also hit out at BJP calling Andhra’s division a sad period for the state. Claiming that Congress alone cannot be blamed for the Telangana tangle, Chiranjeevi said even the NDA promised the state when it was in power. He also lambasted the YSR Congress and Telugu Desam Party for first supporting Telangana and then backtracking.
