Hyderabad: Veteran Telangana leader and former minister Vuppunuthala Purushottam Reddy died of brain stroke in the early hours of Saturday.
He was 80. He is survived by his wife, two daughter and two sons. Purushottam Reddy had suffered brain stroke a couple of months ago and had been in coma since then. He breathed his last at 5.15 am at Apollo Hospitals.
The old war horse from Ramannapet in Nalgonda district, who had resigned from the Congress party at the fag end of his political career and joined the YSR Congress party in September last, was a staunch protagonist of Telangana and he had fought even against former chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy on this count.
However, he was not in his senses when the Telangana state was announced by the Congress high command three days ago.
Vuppunuthala served as minor irrigation minister and excise minister during the regimes of Kasu Brahmananda Reddy and Jalagam Vengal Rao. He was elected as MLA from Ramannapet twice. He was also the chairman of AP Dairy Development Corporation, Andhra Pradesh Public Service Commission and Telangana Development Council. After being with the Congress party for nearly six decades, he took a plunge into the YSR Congress party last year for giving political career to his children.
