Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh, the blue eyed boys of the Yash Raj camp, are back with a rustic action entertainer in the form of ‘Gundey’. Directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, this film has Priyanka Chopra and Irfan Khan in other important lead roles. ‘Gundey’ has hit the screens on the eve of Valentine’s Day and so let’s read on to know what this film.

Story:

Bikram (Ranveer Singh) and Bala (Arjun Kapoor) are childhood buddies who reach Calcutta as refugees from a Bangladeshi camp. They grow up as coal thieves and very soon become the undisputed kings of the illegal coal business in Calcutta.

When everything is going smooth, both Bikram and Bala end up falling in love with Nadia (Priyanka Chopra) who is a cabaret dancer who has recently come to Calcutta. Nadia however lays down a condition for the guys to impress her and based on that, she would select someone as her lover by the end of a week.

Both Bikram and Bala start wooing Nandita individually and while all is going on, the Calcutta police appoint Satyajit (Irfan Khan) to nab these criminals.

Does Satyajit manage to arrest these Gundey? Whom does Nandita select as her lover? For all these answers, you need to watch this film on the big screen.

Plus Points:

‘Gundey’ is all about Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh and their real life friendship shows beautifully on reel life as well. Their chemistry is sizzling as both of them set the screen on fire when they appear together.

Arjun Kapoor does exceptionally well in portraying his character and he showcases some awesome negative shades during the second half. Ranveer gives a mature performance and with this film, he is going to join the ranks of superstars in Bollywood.

Priyanka Chopra projects the necessary glamour to the film and that suits her wonderfully. The action sequences in the coal mines and the way they are executed take you back to Big B’s ‘Kaalia’ days.

The first half of the film is entertaining and has all the necessary action, romance and funny moments. With ‘Gundey’, Bollywood gets back the good old two-hero films that we haven’t been seeing for a long time.

Minus Points:

When you have Irfan Khan in a film, you are bound to expect something special from him. But, unfortunately, that is not the case in ‘Gundey’ as his cop role is just about ordinary. He does not have any powerful dialogues or screen presence and is completely over-shadowed by Arjun and Ranveer.

The concept of best friends and a girl getting in between is tried and tested in many films. While the climax is good, it has been stretched a bit too far.

Technical Aspects:

‘Gundey’ is one film which is high on technical aspects and the entire backdrop of coal mines, the rustic action sequences and dialoguebaazi is just wonderful.

The music of the film is great and tracks like ‘Tune Mari Entriyaan’ and ‘Jiyaa’ are superb and have been shot exceptionally well. The cinematography is amazing and showcases the 70′s of Calcutta really well while the dialogues are top-class and have the massy effect.

As mentioned above, a lot of care has been taken for the action sequences and that shows on screen. The thrills showcased are superb and give you an instant high.

The screenplay of the film is apt and the various twists and turns are executed well. Director Ali Abbas Zafar takes a simple story and sets it up during the 70′s and 80′s quite well. The manner in which he weaves his story amidst two close friends is mind-blowing.

Verdict:

Overall, ‘Gundey’ is one film with all the necessary commercial elements. Arjun and Ranveer Singh’s sizzling chemistry, interesting twists, high on action episodes and a unique triangular love story makes ‘Gundey’ definitely worth a watch.
