Karva Chauth is a one-day festival celebrated by Hindu women from some regions of India, especially northern India, four days after Purnima (a full moon) in the month of Kartika.

On the day of Karwa Chauth, women observe fast (without food and water) to pray for the long life of their husbands. After having observed fast through the day, women offer prayers to Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, and Lord Kartik to bless them with a blissful life.

The Karva Chauth fast is traditionally celebrated in the states of Delhi, Haryana, Rajashtan, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh. It is celebrated as Atla Taddei in Andhra Pradesh.

Historically, Karva Chauth was celebrated as a prayer for the long life of soldiers in the war, and by extension, today refers to the long life of a married husband.

International diva Priyanka Chopra married her singer boyfriend Nick Jonas last year. Ranveer and Deepika also tied the knot around the same time. Comedian Kapil Sharma married Ginni Chatrath soon after. So keeping the fact that these newlyweds haven’t celebrated any Karva Chauth yet, this year may be their first one.
