Amit Mishra equals world record


amit-mishra-6-wicketsBulawayo: India’s legspinner Amit Mishra took six wickets for 48 runs against Zimbabwe here on Saturday to equal the world record for most wickets in a bilateral series.


Mishra bamboozled Zimbabwe batsmen in the fifth and final ODI of the series to finish with his career best figures of 6/48 in 8.5 overs. His superlative bowling helped India bowl the hosts out for 163 in 39.5 overs.

The 30-year-old ended the series with 18 wickets from five games. With this haul he matched former India paceman Javagal Srinath’s record of 18 scalps in a bilateral series. Mishra’s series bowling figures were 3/43, 2/46, 4/47, 3/25 and 6/48. Mishra’s achievement ranks higher than Srinath’s as he bagged 18 in 5 games while the latter featured in a seven-match rubber against New Zealand in 2002-03.

Srinath bowled 398 balls in that series conceding 201 runs and claiming 18 victims. He had best figures of 4/23 and a strike rate of 22.1. His economy rate was 3.03 and average 11.16. Mishra delivered 285 balls and took 18/209 at a strike rate of 15.8. His average was 11.61. This was Mishra’s first ODI series after 2 years. Before the Zimbabwe tour, he last played for India in June, 2011 against West Indies.
