Farmers Protest: India Lashes Out At Canadian PM’s Remarks On The Protests

After opposition leaders and former sportspersons extended their support to the farmers’ protests against the farm bills brought by the Union government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, International leaders have also come in support of farmers. Days after MPs from the UK and Britain supported the farmers, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau joined the list of farmers’ supporters. He said the protests from farmers raises many concerns.

The Canadian PM who participated in a Facebook interaction on the occasion of the 551st birth anniversary of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, extended his support to the farmers in the farm bills row. He said the news he is receiving over the protests from India is concerning. We are worried about our friends(farmers) and family members who are taking part in the protest. We always support the right to peaceful protest.

This did not go well with India. The Ministry of External Affairs has hit back at the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau over his statements in connection with the farmer’s protests. The External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Anurag Srivastava issued a statement in this regard. He said the ill-informed comments by Canadian leaders on the issue are unwarranted. If we look at the political scenario behind the Canadian leader’s statements, the nation enjoys a fair share of the Punjabi population. The farmers from Punjab are steering the protests.

Just like how the Indian-Americans play a significant role and can be a deciding factor in the elections, the Punjabi population in Canada holds the power to play a crucial role. The controversy intensified after Shiv Sena gave a befitting reply to the Canadian Prime Minister’s statements on the ongoing farmer’s protests against the farm bills.

Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi took to Twitter and asked the Canadian Prime Minister to respect the courtesies we(India) extends to other countries.

“Dear @JustinTrudeau, touched by your concern but Indias internal issue is not fodder for another nations politics. Pls respect the courtesies that we always extend to other nations. Request PM @narendramodi ji to resolve this impasse before other countries find it okay to opine,” the MP’s tweet read.
