Microsoft mocks Apple, offers iPhone users extra storage space

Microsoft-mocks-AppleApple’s iOS8 rollout to users has been marred by the extra internal storage that the update requires. For example on iPad with retina displays, the update requires at least 6.9GB of free space if you are downloading the OS over-the-air.

The situation is so bad that it is almost impossible for iPhone 5C (8GB) users to update to the iOS 8. This has angered users. And now Microsoft is trying to cash in on the anger.

On Friday, the company posted a blog post, informing iPhone users that they can get extra 15GB free storage on Microsoft OneDrive.

“While it might seem strange to announce new features on a Friday evening, we’ve been listening to the commentary about storage on the new iPhones released today and we wanted to get you more storage right away. We think you’ll appreciate having more free storage while setting up your iPhone 6 or upgrading to iOS 8,” A Microsoft executive wrote on the company blog in a not-so-subtle dig at Apple.

Actually, the new Microsoft offer is to double the amount of cloud storage to any smartphone user who uses OneDrive to back up his or her photos. But given the fiasco over the storage that iOS 8 update requires, it seems Microsoft decided to have a little fun with Apple.

“Not an iPhone user? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. This also applies to anyone who already uses the OneDrive camera roll on Windows Phone, Android, and Windows – you’ll see your storage go up as well. Same for any existing iPhone users who backup their photos to OneDrive,” the Microsoft executive wrote.
