Massive Fire Breaks Out At Serum Institute of India


A massive fire broke out at Serum Institute of India, the largest vaccine manufacturer, in Pune on Thursday afternoon. The blaze was reported at a building near the Terminal Gate-1 of the SII, which is at the Manjri area of the city. The accident happened on the fifth floor of a building near Terminal Gate-1, officials said. Ten fire engines rushed to the spot to contain the blaze. Police and local authorities have also reached the site and rescue and support operations have been launched.

Reports suggest that the fire covered one of the production plants of the institute. The plant is located near the manufacturing unit of Covishield. More details on the fire accident are yet to be revealed.

The Serum Institute of India is manufacturing anti-Covid-19 vaccine called Covishield. The vaccine developed by the Oxford University and pharmaceuticals company AstraZeneca. Serum Institute of India was founded by Cyrus Poonawalla in 1966.
